Long Island in Winter

If you're looking to take advantage of what winter offers on the Island, here are a few suggestions on how to spend your time away from campus this January:

Hofstra students enjoy an afternoon at the Cradle of Aviation.
  1. If taking a train all the way to Manhattan to do some ice skating isn't your thing, and you or a friend has a car handy, you can take a quick trip over to one of the myriad rinks on the Island. Though the outdoor rink at nearby RXR Plaza is closed for the season, there is still Newbridge Arena in Bellmore (about 10 minutes away from campus by car), Cantiague Park in Hicksville (about 15 minutes away) and the Town of Oyster Bay Skating Rink in Bethpage (about 20 minutes away), each of which have public sessions throughout the week.
  2. The NHL lockout is finally over! And with the season set to commence in a matter of days, you can take a quick stroll to cheer on the New York Islanders at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Hockey is one of the most exciting sports to watch live and the Coliseum has great rates on tickets for Hofstra students. Whether you're a first-timer or a long-time fan, the games are exhilarating and definitely worth checking out.
  3. In case you weren't aware, there is a handful of wonderful museums located just a stone's throw away from North Campus. Museum Row, located off Charles Lindbergh Boulevard in Garden City, is home to three museums and educational centers including The Cradle of Aviation: an aeronautics museum that details the history and innovations in the field only paces from where Mitchell Airfield once stood; the Francis X. Pendl Nassau County Firefighters' Museum and Educational Center and (in case younger family members ever come to visit) the Long Island Children's Museum.
